Welcome to the Antigonish Heritage Museum!

We are a community museum housed in the former CN Railway Station building; a well preserved example of a Class 3 Station once common throughout the Maritimes and across Canada.  Our location is 20 E Main St, in the Town of Antigonish.  With the end of passenger rail service in February 1989, CN deemed the building surplus and sold it to the Town of Antigonish, for use by a not for profit enterprise. The Antigonish Heritage Museum was opened to the public Jun 27 1991.   It is dedicated to the preservation and promotion of the heritage of Antigonish Town and County.  We are a year round operation with extended summertime hours to serve the public.  Parking is ample; entrance, main floor and washrooms are all accessible.   There is no admission fee, but donations are gladly received. We are fortunate to have the support of the Town of Antigonish and the Municipality County of Antigonish as majority financial contributors to the operation of this community museum.  Not limited to financing, we enjoy the privilege of having two members of each council serve on the Museum Board of Directors.  Additional funding comes from the Community Museums Assistance Program (CMAP), Heritage Association of Antigonish, and free will donations from the public. The main exhibit areas within the Museum feature displays that tell of our community’s rich history and material culture.  Our Resource Room houses a wealth of material for the researcher and genealogist.  We have a library containing published books, school, church and community histories and much more.  An archival component of the museum houses photographic images, art, maps, business ledgers and other documents. Each year in partnership with the Heritage Association of Antigonish, we host a guest lecture series in order to stimulate an interest in our heritage.  Subjects may include biographical sketches, natural history, events, business and community stories. During the summer months, weekly ceilidhs are held for locals and tourists alike.  Learners and more seasoned performers bring traditional music of the fiddle, piano, pipes, guitar and more to the audience.  The acoustics and architectural elements of the building provide an ambient setting.
