Biography
Private William Dewar Turnbull was born December 8, 1884 in Frasers Mills, Antigonish County. He was the son of Samuel Abraham Turnbull and Christina Agnes Dewar. Prior to enlistment, he worked as a clerk. It is also listed on Turnbull’s First World War Personel Records that he was also a musician.
William Turnbull enlisted on August 24, 1915 in Sussex, New Brunswick. Turnbull first served with the 64th Overseas Battalion. He was transferred to the 40th Battalion on September 25, 1916. He was transferred again on June 16, 1917 to serve with the 85th Battalion Overseas unit in France. The unit arrived in Étaples, France on June 7, 1917. He continued to serve in England and France with this unit until demobilzation. Turnbull was discharged due to demobilization in Halifax, Nova Scotia on June 15, 1919.
After the war, Turnbull resided in the town of Antigonish and worked as the superintendent of the Fish Hatchery in Frasers Mills. He died on August 30, 1957 in Frasers Mills.
