Biography

Private William Joseph MacDonald  was born April 22, 1896 in Frasers Mills, Antigonish county. He was the son of Dan J. and Lillian MacDonald. Prior to enlistment William Joseph MacDonald worked as a school teacher.

MacDonald enlisted March 1, 1916 in the No. 9 Station Hospital with the Canadian Army Medical Corps. This medical Corp was organized by Saint Francis Xavier University. MacDonald served in Britain and France, mainly in Brampshot Military Hopsital, UK and Etaples, France. While serving with the Number 9 Stationary unit, MacDonald endured three bouts of Influenza and one bout of diphtheria where he had to be admitted in these hospitals as a patient. MacDonald was discharged due to demobilization on July 9, 1919 in Halifax Nova Scotia.

Following the war, Private William Joseph MacDonald married Bernice Olive Scott in Rabbit Hill, Alberta June 21, 1923.  He was listed as a farmer in the 1931 Census. MacDonald died May 24, 1979 in Camrose Alberta and is buried with his wife in Valleyview Cemetery, Camrose, Alberta.
