Biography
William Charles DeWolfe was born April 30th, 1913, in Ship Harbour, Halifax County, to Charles and Anna May “Webb” DeWolfe.
William enlisted in the Royal Canadian Navy on October 4th, 1939. During his time in the Navy, he served aboard the Stadacona, St. Laurent, Niagara, HMCS Cornwallis, Sudbury, Kent, Avalon (Malpeque), and Niobe. The ships he served on travelled between the Atlantic and the United Kingdom.
William began his naval service with the rank of Stoker and was later promoted to Leading Stoker. He was also granted his Auxiliary Watchkeeping Certificate. He was discharged on May 24th, 1942.
For his service, he was awarded the 1939-1945 Star, the Atlantic Star, the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and Clasp, and the War Medal.
William married Alice Mary MacPherson of Upper South River on June 1st, 1941. Together they had eight children.
William passed away April 29th, 2003, and is buried in the South River Cemetery in St. Andrews, Antigonish County.
