Biography
Private Wendell Alexander MacHattie was born December 4, 1881 at South River Lake, Antigonish County. He was the son of Alexander John MacHattie and Janet Hattie. His mother died when he was a year old in 1882. His father married Isabel MacGregor of South River Lake, Antigonish County. By 1908, his family moved to a farm at Copper Lake, Antigonish County where MacHattie farmed and worked as a miner for the Copper mine in the area. MacHattie was listed as a farmer on his attestation paper.
MacHattie enlisted in the 193rd Battalion Nova Scotia Highlanders March 31, 1916 in Antigonish. He sailed for England from Halifax on October 12, 1916 and arrived in Liverpool October 19, 1916. He was sent to France and transfered to the 42nd Canadian Battalion December 6, 1916. MacHattie was hospitalized for mumps at the 7th General Hospital March 1, 1917. He was discharged from hospital March 22, 1917 and rejoined the 42nd Canadian Battalion. In April of 1919, the 42nd Canadian Battalion participated in the Battle of Vimy Ridge. MacHattie was killed in action on the field on April 9, 1917. His body was not found or identified. His name is inscribed on the ramparts of the Vimy Memorial, Pas-de-Calais, France in his memory.
