Biography

Walter Grace was born April 28, 1890 in Upper Springfield, Antigonish County. He was the son of John Grace and Johanna Duggan. His brothers Benjamin Grace, James Grace and John Henry Grace were also a veterans of the First World War. Grace moved to the United States in June of 1910 to work as a lineman. At the time of enlistment he lived two doors down from his brother James Grace on Gainsboro Street, Boston Massachusetts.

Grace enlisted as a sapper for the 1st Canadian Engineers May 16, 1918 in Saint John, New Brunswick. He arrived in England August 15, 1918 and trained and served in England. He was discharged due to demobilization November 17, 1919.

Following the war, Grace moved to Charlestown, Massachusetts. He is listed in the 1920 United States Federal Census as living in Charlestown with his wife Susan and step-daughter Bell MacKenzie. Grace worked as an electrician and his wife worked as a car cleaner for the railroad. By 1930, Grace and his wife moved back to Boston and he continued to work as an electrician. Grace was naturalized as an American citizen January 9, 1950. Grace died September 18, 1965 in Roxbury, Boston, Massachusetts.
