Biography
Private Thomas Mullins was born June 20, 1896 in Dublin, Ireland. He was the son of Peter Mullins and Annie MacLauglin of Ireland. Prior to the war Mullins worked as a domestic in the home of Mary Chisholm in Marydale, Antigonish County, where he is listed in the 1911 Census of Canada. This was also the residence of First World War veteran Thomas Chisholm in 1911 as he was living with his aunt, Mary Chisholm.
Mullins enlisted in the 1st Depot Battalion Nova Scotia Regiment, February 15, 1918 in Halifax, Nova Scotia. Mullins arrived in England on May 19, 1918 and was transferred to the Royal Canadian Regiment Operations on September 5, 1918 to serve on continental Europe. Mullins was then transferred to the 2nd Infantry Battalion September 9, 1918 and served in France with this unit until March 18, 1919 when he returned to England. Mullins returned to Canada from England on the RMS Olympic April 24, 1919. He was discharged due to demobilization in Halifax on April 29, 1919.
Following the war, Mullins lived in Halifax where he worked as a labourer and clerk. On September 16, 1919, he married Alice Campbell at St. Patrick’s Church in Halifax.
