Biography
Sergeant Stanley Clifford Barter was born on March 23, 1923 in the town of Antigonish, Antigonish County. He was the son of George Barter and Mable Turnbull.
Barter’s brother George William Barter also served in the Second World and was killed in action while serving overseas. His uncle William Turnbull was a veteran of the First World War.
Barter served in the Canadian Army with Governor General’s Foot Guards, then the Royal Canadian Dragoons Armoured Corp as a gunner. He was wounded while serving in the Netherlands when his tank was hit in battle but continued to serve until demobilization.
Following the war, Barter moved to North Lochaber, Antigonish County where he lived with his mother; his father having died in 1942. Barter continued to serve in the Canadian Army after the war as he is listed as a soldier on the 1949 Voter List.
Barter served in the Korean War in the 1950s.
By 1968, Barter married Alida C. Kelch and was living in Esquimalt, Victoria, British Columbia. By 1980, Barter had returned to Antigonish County and was living in Lochaber with his wife. Barter died in 1980. He is buried in North Lochaber Cemetery, Antigonish County.
