Biography

Private Stanley Alexander MacNaughton was born February 19, 1891 at Loch Katrine, Antigonish County. His full name was Robert Alexander Stanley MacNaughton. He was the son of James F. MacNaughton and Annie MacHattie. Prior to enlistment he farmed on his family’s farm at Loch Katrine. He had previousy served three years with a Canadian militia unit, the 18th Field Battery.

MacNaughton enlisted in the 193rd Battalion March 31, 1916 in Antigonish. He was transferred to the 246th Battalion August 18, 1916.  MacNaughton likley trained with these units at Aldershot Camp, Kings County. In October of 1916, MacNaughton was examined by a doctor in Horton, Kings County where it was noted on file that he complained of his ankle hurting and lameness. It was also noted that he had previously fractured one of his legs. The doctor recommended that MacNaughton be sent to the Special Service Company due to his disability. He was transferred to the No. 6 Special Service Company on November 15, 1916. MacNaughton was discharged from the military in Halifax February 17, 1917.

Following service, MacNaughton married Mary Janet MacGregor of Upper South River, Antigonish County. They married Novemeber 12, 1919 in Upper South River and moved to a farm at Loch Katrine shortly after. They had a daughter, Olive in 1921 and son, James Elwood in 1924. By 1931 MacNaughton worked as sales agent for lighting rods in addition to farming at Loch Katrine. In October of 1939, MacNaughton’s wife Mary Janet MacGregor died. She died October 23, 1939 at St. Marthas Hospital in the town of Antigonish, Antigonish County. MacNaughton eventually left Antigonish and moved to New Westminster, British Columbia. MacNaughton died December 6, 1980 at Queens Park Hospital, New Westminister. He is buried with his wife in Nova Scotia at Kings United Church Cemetery, Loch Katrine, Antigonish County.
