Biography
Private Samuel MacPherson was born February 16, 1889 in South River, Antigonish County. He was the son of John Hugh MacPherson and Catherine McDonald. MacPherson moved to Western Canada in 1906 and joined a harvest excursion. He later worked in Phoenix, British Columbia to work with a mining company. He then worked on the Grandview Great Northern Railway cut in 1908 and the building of the B. C. Electric electrified tram line from Vancouver to Chilliwack, British Columbia which was completed in 1910. By 1911, MacPherson joined the logging industry and was working in Thurlow Island, British Columbia.
Prior to his enlistment, MacPherson worked as a logger for B. C. Mills Timber and Trading Company in Blind Channel, West Thurlow Island, British Columbia. MacPherson enlisted in the Canadian Expeditionary Forces in Vancouver, British Columbia on April 9, 1918 to serve with the 11th Battalion of the Canadian Garrison Regiment. He was struck off the Canadian Expeditionary Force on April 8, 1919 in Vancouver due to illegal absence.
After the war, MacPherson worked as a logger in Cranford Anchorage, Comox British Columba. In 1920, MacPherson married Rose Wilhelmina Kiltimen on July 3, 1920 in Vancouver. MacPherson died on November 6, 1990 at Hilltop Extended Care Hospital House in Squamish, British Columbia. He is buried at Valley View Memorial Gardens, Surrey, British Columbia.
