Biography

Ronald MacGillivray was born July 12, 1898 in St. Andrews, Antigonish County. He was the son of Dan. J. MacGillivray and Margaret MacGillivray. Prior to enlistment he worked as a carpenter in St. Andrews.

MacGillivray enlisted in the 1st Depot Battalion of the New Brunswick Regiment June 8, 1918 at Aldershot Camp, Nova Scotia. He arrived in Liverpool, England  on August 15, 1918 and was transfered to the Canadian Regimental Training Depot in Purfleet upon arrival. On October 10, 1918, MacGillivray was sent to France to be transferred to the 2nd Battalion of the Canadian Railway Troops as rifle infantry. MacGillivray was discharged due to demobilzation April 14, 1919 in Halifax.

Following the war, MacGillivary farmed at his family’s farm in St. Andrews until June of 1922 when he moved to Roxbury, Boston, Massachusetts and worked as a carpenter. MacGillivray returned to Canada in 1928 and was listed as living in St. Andrews on his family’s farm in the 1931 Census of Canada. MacGillivray died June 15, 1949 in St. Andrews, Antigonish County Nova Scotia. He is buried in South River Cemetry, Antigonish County.
