Biography

Private Peter J. MacDonald was born September 11, 1896 in Frasers Mills. He was the son of John Lachie MacDonald and Mary MacDonald. MacDonald’s twin brother Angus MacDonald and younger brother Father Alexander MacDonald also served in the Canadian Expeditionary Forces for the First World War. Prior to enlistment MacDonald worked as a school teacher. He had previously studied at St. Augustine’s Seminary, Toronto  but had left to teach in the Antigonish area.

MacDonald enlisted as a gunner in the 10th Siege Battalion May 29, 1918 in Halifax, Nova Scotia. MacDonald was admitted to Cogswell Street Military Hospital, Halifax October 27, 1918 for influenza and was discharged December 4, 1918 and was transferred to the No. 6 Artillery Depot. MacDonald was then discharged on December 20, 1918 due to demobilization.

Following the war, MacDonald lived at his family’s farm in Frasers Mills and continued to work as a teacher.

Peter J. MacDonald died April 17, 1963. He is buried in South River Cemetery, Antigonish County.
