Biography
Private Oliver Horehan was born April 2, 1892 in Upper South River, Antigonish County. He was the son of Dan O’Connel Horehan and Ann Bray. Prior to enlistment he worked as a farmer in Upper South River.
Horehan enlisted in the 1st Depot Battalion, Nova Scotia Regiment April 27, 1918 in Halifax. He arrived in Liverpool, England August 15, 1918 and was posted to the 17th Reserve Battalion in Bramshot, Hampshire August 16, 1918 where he stayed until May of 1919. In May Horehan was sent to Wormald Green Ranges near Ripon, North Yorkshire where he trained from May 6 to May 27, 1919. Horehan was admitted to the Military Hospital in Ripon for Impetigo June 25, 1919 and was discharged from hospital July 15, 1919. Following his discharge, Horehan was sent to train at Witley Camp, Surrey on July 19, 1919 where he remained until he was sent home to Canada. Horehan returned to Canada in August of 1919 and was discharged due to demobilzation in Halifax on August 31, 1919.
Following the war, Horehan farmed on his family’s farm in Upper South River. He is listed on the 1921 Census of Canada as a farmer in Upper South River and living with his mother Ann and brother John. It appears that Horehan eventually moved to Timmins, Ontario as there is an undated file in his First World War Personnel Record requesting that his medals be sent to Timmins.
