Biography

Corporal Mary Agnes MacDonald was born on December 29, 1913 in Frasers Mills, Antigonish County. She was the daughter of Duncan “Grey” MacDonald and Mary “Minnie” Gillis.

MacDonald’s brothers Daniel James MacDonald and John Joseph “Joe Duncan” MacDonald also served in the Second World War.

MacDonald enlisted June 15, 1942 in Toronto with the Canadian Women’s Army Corps. She served in Canada and England from 1942 to 1945. She was discharged in 1945 with the rank of Corporal.In recognition of her service, MacDonald was awarded the Canadan Volunteer Service Medal and Clasp, the Defence Medal and the War Medal 1939-1945.

After the war MacDonald married Ernest Ryan, an ex-service man who she met during the war. They moved to Sudbury, Ontario where they raised two sons and two daughters.

She died in 1980 in Sudbury Ontario.
