Biography
Joseph Ryan was born in Canso, Nova Scotia, to Francis and Eva Selene (DeCoste) Ryan.
He joined the Canadian Merchant Navy in 1941 and served aboard the Royal Canadian Navy corvette HMCS Kenogami, which escorted ships across the Atlantic during the Second World War. He was discharged in 1946.
In 1947, Joseph moved to Lower South River, where he married Agnes Campbell.
