Biography

Private Joseph Leo Conlon was born March 23, 1897 in Port Lambton, Lambton County, Ontario. He was the son of John Patrick Conlon and Mary Ann Flanigan. Prior to enlistment he worked as a farmer.

Conlon enlisted May 16, 1918 with the 1st Depot Battalion of the Western Ontario Regiment Division in London, Ontario. He arrived in England aboard the S.S. Pannonia on August 15, 1918. Upon arrival, he was transferred to the 4th Reserve Battalion in Witley, Surrey. Conlon served in England with this unit until demobilization. He returned to Canada on the H.M.T. Mauretania on June 28, 1919 and was discharged due to demobilization July 7, 1919 in Montréal, Québec.

Following the war, Conlon farmed on his family’s farm in Sombra, Lambton County. In 1931 he was still residing in Sombra but was listed as a sailor. Conlon married Mary Janet Cameron of South Side Harbour, Antigonish County sometime between 1931 and 1949.  By 1949 Colon and his wife had moved to a farm in Caledonia Mills, Antigonish County where he farmed until his retirement.

Conlon died December 19, 1964 at St. Martha’s Hospital in Antigonish. He is buried in St. Andrew Parish Cemetery, St. Andrews, Antigonish County.
