Biography
Lance Corporal Joseph Dennis Bray was born on August 20, 1890 in Springfield, Antigonish County. He was the son of John Bray and Margaret Floyd. In 1911 he lived in Springfield and was listed as a student in the 1911 Census of Canada. In 1917 he married Margaret McLean of Lochaber, Antigonish County at St. Patrick Catholic Church, Lochaber on August 14, 1917.
Bray’s younger brother William D. Bray served in the First World War but with the American Expeditionary Forces.
At the time of enlistment, Bray worked as a Carpenter in Halifax, Nova Scotia. Bray enlisted in the 1st Depot Battalion of the Nova Scotia Regiment June 23, 1918 at Aldershot, Nova Scotia. He was transferred to the 6th Battalion of the Canadian Garrison Regiment in Halifax July 18, 1918 in Halifax and was promoted to Lance Corporal in Halifax on August 15, 1918. Bray was discharged due to demobilization July 31, 1919 in Halifax, Nova Scotia.
After the war, Bray’s wife Margaret gave birth to a daughter in December of 1919 in Halifax. They had two more daughters in 1921 and 1923. The family immigrated to Massachusetts in March of 1923 where Bray worked as a Carpenter in Jamaica Plain, Boston, Massachusetts. They had a son in Boston in 1925.
Bray died in May of 1934 in Jamaica, Plain, Boston Massachusetts. He is buried in Saint Joseph Cemetery, West Roxbury, Suffolk County, Massachusetts.
