Biography
Private John MacLean was born May 5, 1879 in Pinevale, Antigonish County. He was the son of Donald “Dan” MacLean of Scotland from Upper South River and Catherine MacLean of Pitcher’s Farm. By 1881 his family was living in Upper South River, Antigonish County and had moved to Dunmore, Antigonish County by 1891. By 1901, the MacLeans had moved to Lower South River, Antigonish County.
MacLean enlisted in the 193rd Battalion March 21, 1916 in Antigonish. Prior to enlistment he worked as a carpenter and farmer. MacLean was discharged in Halifax on December 4, 1916 due to being medically unfit. His medical record states this was due to asthma, myalgia and possible effects of an appendicitis operation in 1912.
Following his service in the war, MacLean married Isabella MacLean of Brierly Brook, Antigonish County, October 16, 1917 in Antigonish, Nova Scotia. They resided in Brierly Brook where they had their first born son in 1919. By 1921, MacLean had moved with his family to Rossland, Kootenay, British Columbia, and had two more sons and a daughter in British Columbia. MacLean died January 31, 1924 in Rossland, Kootenay, British Columbia. He is buried with his wife in Calvary Catholic Cemetery in Rossland.
