Biography

John MacGillivray was born January 4, 1892 in Frasiers Mills, Antigonish County. He was the son of  Alexander MacGillivray and Margaret “Maggie” Cameron.

MacGillivray moved to British Columbia, then Saskatchewan before the war.

MacGillivray died April 10, 1917 the 28ths advancement along the Lens- Arras Road, part of the Battle of Vimy Ridge. MacGillivary died of wounds received in action at the No. 4 Canadian Field Ambulance close by.

MacGillivray was enlisted as John MacDonald and his mother as “Maggie” MacDonald. This caused confusion following his death as there was no Mrs. Maggie MacDonald. Mr. W. D. Cameron, author of the local history and genology column “Drummer on Foot” in The Casket newspaper was able to match John MacDonald to John MacGillivray. This was a shock to MacGillivray’s family as they “had not hear of him since April 1916”. This date corresponds to his date of enlistment.

John MacGillivray is buried in Écoivres Military Cemetery, Mont-Saint-Éloi, France.
