Biography

Private John “Joe Duncan” Joseph MacDonald was born on April 4, 1915, in Frasers Mills. He was the son of Duncan “Grey” MacDonald and Mary “Minnie” Gillis.

MacDonald’s brother Daniel “Dan” James MacDonald and sister Mary Agnes MacDonald also served in the Second World War.

MacDonald enlisted May 18, 1943 in Vancouver, British Columbia. He served 27 months at sea in the North Atlantic and the English Channel. He was awarded the 1935-1945 Star, the France and Germany Star and Clasp, the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and Clasp and the War Medal.

Following the war MacDonald worked as a heavy equipment operator in British Columbia and Nova Scotia. He died in 1986 in Frasers Mills, Antigonish County.
