Biography
John James MacDonald was born November 4, 1914 in Caledonia Mills, Antigonish County. He was the son of John A. MacDonald and Mary Elizabeth MacDonald. His brother, Allan Daniel MacDonald also served in the Second World War.
MacDonald enlisted and trained at the No. 6 Military District Depot in Halifax. He then served overseas with the Kangaroo Regiment where he served in France, Germany and Holland. In recoginition of his service, MacDonald recieved the Defence Medal, the France and Germany Star, the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and the 1939-1945 War Medal.
While in Holland, MacDonald met Willemina Johanna Aredina Hendrikse of Zutphen, Gelderland, Holland and had a daughter in Holland. Hendrikse arrived in New York with their daughter to meet MacDonald on April 22, 1947. They married three days later at the Cathedral of Immaculate Conception in Saint John, New Brunswick on April 25, 1947. They then moved to Lower South River, Antigonish County, where they had seven more children. MacDonald worked several jobs after the war. Shortly after the war he worked as a carpenter and from 1955 to 1970 he was the manager of the Co-Op store in St. Andrews where he worked for fifteen years. MacDonald died November 2, 1970 at St. Martha’s Hospital in Antigonish, Antigonish County. He is buried in St. Andrews, Antigonish County.
