Biography

John Daniel Bowie was born December 8th, 1917, to William and Mary (MacDonald) Bowie.

John enlisted in the Canadian Army on December 21st, 1942. He served in North Africa, Italy, France, Belgium, Holland, England, and Germany. He served with the 12th Field Company, Royal Canadian Engineers, in Italy from January 1944 to February 28th, 1945. He was sent to Italy following the Battle of Ortona to help replace the unit’s casualties. He continued to serve with the 12th Field Company in Holland from March 15th to July 15th, 1945, before transferring to the 1st Field Company, where he served from July to September 1945. After the war ended, his duties included clearing minefields, building bridges in Holland, and serving as the company shoemaker. John was discharged on January 29th, 1946.

For his service, he was awarded the 1939-1945 Star, the Italy Star, the France and Germany Star, the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and Clasp, and the War Medal 1939-1945.

John married Elizabeth Veronica MacDonald on June 17th, 1947. Together they had eleven children.
