Following the death of his father in 1905, his family moved into to the town of Antigonish and were listed as living with his uncle William P. Chisholm in the town in 1911.  Prior to enlistment, his family had moved to a farm in Slyvan Valley, Antigonish County where Chisholm worked as a farmer.

Chisholm enlisted in the 1st Depot Battalion of the Nova Scotia Regiment June 7, 1918 at Aldershot Camp, Kings County, Nova Scotia. He was discharged from service shortly after on June 29, 1918 due to medical unfitness at Aldershot Camp, Nova Scotia.

Following the war, Chisholm continued to farm on his family’s farm in Slyvan Valley in the 1920s and 1930s. Chisholm died on October 1, 1939 at St. Martha’s Hospital in Antigonish. He is buried in St. Ninian’s Parish Cemetery, Antigonish, Antigonish County.
