Biography

Hugh MacGillivray was born January 12, 1897 in Dunmore, Antigonish County. He was the son of John and Annie MacGillivray. Before the war he worked as a farmer in Dunmore.

MacGillivray enlisted in the 1st Depot Battalion of the Nova Scotia Regiment  at Aldershot Camp, Kings County on June 8, 1918. He sailed from Halifax to England on August 2, 1918 and arrived in Liverpool on August 16, 1918. Upon arrival MacGillivray was transferred to the 17th Reserve Battalion and sent to Bourley Woods Segregation Camp in Aldershot Hampshire. He continued to serve in England until he returned to Canada for demobilzation in June of 1919. He was discharged July 3, 1919 in Halifax.
