Biography
Hugh Leonard Kelly was born on May 4, 1918, in Upper South River to John Edward and Mary (O’Callahan) Kelly.
Hugh married Bertha Grant on November 3, 1942, and worked as a shipwright at the Pictou shipyard before enlisting in the army in Halifax on May 12, 1943. He served overseas in England and North-Western Europe as an infantry soldier.
Hugh was discharged in Halifax on April 6, 1946. For his service, he was awarded the France and Germany Star and the 1939–1945 War Medal.
After the war, he worked as a self-employed carpenter and mason throughout Antigonish. His wife, Bertha, passed away in 1946, and he later married Margaret Effie MacLeod.
Hugh passed away in Antigonish on February 9, 1999, at the age of 79.
