Biography

Lance Corporal Harker Elwood MacGregor was born October 8, 1899 in Upper South River, Antigonish County. He was the son of George James MacGregor and Annie MacMillan. Before enlistment, he worked as a farmer on his family’s farm in Upper South River. MacGregor had previously served in the 18th Battery in Antigonish for 5 years before enlistment.

MacGregor enlisted in the 193rd Battalion March 21, 1916 in Antigonish. He trained at Aldershot Camp, Kings County, Nova Scotia with the 193rd Battalion until late September when he developed Pulmonary Tuburculosis and was sent to the Provincial Sanatorium in Kentville, Kings County on September 29, 1916. He was discharged from the sanatorium on October 19, 1916.  MacGregor died of Pulmonary Tuburculosis and measles at his home in Upper South River on November 30, 1916. He remained in the service until his death. MacGregor is buried in Cummings Cemetery, Upper South River, Antigonish County.
