Biography
George Vickers was born on July 6, 1918, in Sydney Mines to Jacob and Elizabeth (Delphine) Vickers.
He enlisted with the Cape Breton Highlanders as a gunner and served overseas during the Second World War. George was seriously wounded in Italy and was discharged in May 1945.
After returning home, he married Margaret Violet Ratchford of North Sydney at St. Anne-de-Bellevue in Montreal. In the spring of 1947, he purchased a store in North Sydney.
In 1966, George and his family moved to Lower South River, where he purchased MacMillan’s Store and renamed it Vickers General Store.
George retired to Port Hawkesbury in July 1974 and passed away on December 28, 2003.
