Biography
PrIvate George Dooley was born June 15, 1896. His death record states that was brought up in an orphange, however his military record states that he was born in Windsor Junction, Halifax County. In 1911 he was living with John and Flora Chisholm in Pomquet River, Antigonish County. John and Flora Chisholm had previously adopted children so it is likely that they adopted Dooley. Prior to enlistment, he worked as a farmer in Pomquet River, Antigonish County.
On June 3, 1916, Dooley enlisted at McNab’s Island, Halifax with the 63rd Regiment of the Halifax Rifles. He then enlisted in the 1st Depot Battalion of the Nova Scotia Regiment on April 4 1918 at McNabs Island. Dooley arrived in England on July 7, 1918. He was transfered to the 17th Reserve Battalion in Bramshott, Hampshire upon arrival. He was sent back to Canada and arrived in Halifax on November 29, 1918. Upon arrival he was posted to the Casualty Company in Halifax. He was discharged due to dembolization December 21, 1918 in Halifax, Nova Scotia.
Following the war, Dooley moved to Halifax County where he worked as a labourer. He married Pearl Sawler of Dartmouth, Nova Scotia and had a son born in 1928. Dooley died Janurary 16, 1962 in his home on Springvale Avenue, Fairview in Halifax Nova Scotia. He is buried in Gate of Heaven Cemetery, Lower Sackville, Halifax County.
