Biography
George Ambrose Bowles was born May 19th, 1925, in Alden River, Guysborough County, to George H. and Mary Ann (MacDonald) Bowles.
Ambrose enlisted in the Canadian Army in 1944 at the age of 19 and sailed to England aboard the New Amsterdam. He served in England, Belgium, and Holland before the war in Europe ended and then re-enlisted for the Pacific Force. The war in the Pacific ended before he was able to deploy.
For his service, Ambrose was awarded the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal, the 1939-1945 Star, and the Netherlands “Thank You” Medal.
Ambrose married Teresa Mary Catherine MacPherson on August 14th, 1951. Together they raised eight children at their home in Springfield. Ambrose operated a farm and woodlot in Springfield while also working in security at St. Francis Xavier University.
