Biography

Private Ebenezer J. Henderson was born January 15, 1896 at Copper Lake, Antigonish County. He was the son of Daniel R. Henderson and Maria Sinclair. Prior to enlistment he worked as a farmer on his family’s farm.

Henderson enlisted in the 1st Nova Scotia Depot Battalion June 8, 1918 at Aldershot camp, Kings County, Nova Scotia. He was discharged September 16, 1918 at Aldershot Camp in Kings County Nova Scotia.

Following the war, Henderson worked on his family’s farm and as a miner at the cppper mine nearby. He also worked as a carpenter and as a district road foreman for the Liberal government.  His surveying included surveying properties around Copper Lake for a proposed airplane landing strip, however nothing came of this plan. In 1942 Henderson married local school teacher Vera Williams of West River, Antigonish County. They married Feburary 4, 1942 at the United Church of Canada on Chestnut Street in Halifax. They had eight children; seven daughters and one son.

Henderson worked for three years in construction in Halifax in the 1940s. In his later years, Henderson  and his wife moved into the town of Antigonish where he wintered and spent his summers at Copper Lake. Henderson died at Whidden’s Trailer Court in Antigonish on March 10 1969. He is buried in Burns Cemetery, Copper Lake, Antigonish County.
