Biography
Duncan James Chisholm was born in Meadow Green on September 8, 1909, to Roderick and Mary Elizabeth (MacDonald) Chisholm. He was the brother of Joseph Colin Chisholm, who also served in the military.
In 1929, at the age of 17, Duncan immigrated to the United States to live with his maternal uncle, Rob MacDonald, in the Bronx. Before leaving Nova Scotia, he had worked as a farm labourer. During the 1930s, he worked as a private chauffeur in Bedford, New York. In 1940, he was employed by Tracy Towing Line at 1 Broadway while living in Suffolk.
He married Ita “Eita” M. Quinn in Manhattan on October 10, 1935. The couple divorced in 1942.
Duncan registered for the draft on October 16, 1940, in Long Island. On September 17, 1943, he enlisted in the United States Army in New York City. At the time of his enlistment, he was not yet an American citizen.
Shortly after enlisting, he was hospitalized at the U.S. Army Halloran General Hospital on Staten Island. He died there on May 4, 1944, from diffuse peritonitis while still in military service. At the time of his death, he was married to Jennie Agnes Chisholm.
He was buried at St. Raymond’s Cemetery on May 8, 1944.
