Biography
Corporal Duncan Joseph MacDonald was born April 20, 1910 at MacPherson’s Post Office, Antigonish County. He was the son of John L. MacDonald and Isabelle “Bella” MacNeil. His brothers Allan A. MacDonald and Jerome D. A. MacDonald also served in the Second World War. MacDonald married Katherine “Kaye” Chisholm of Cross Roads Ohio, Antigonish County at St. Ninian’s Cathedral in Antigonish, January 5, 1942. They had eight children together.
MacDonald enlisted in the Canadian Army on September 4, 1942 and served in Canada and Britain with the Royal Canadian Engineers. He was honerably discharged with the rank of Corporal on March 24, 1946.
After the war, MacDonald worked as an electrician and eventually moved to Massachusetts. He worked in Massachusetts for ten years before retiring in Antigonish. MacDonald died on October 3, 1999 in Antigonish. He is buried in South River Cemetery, Antigonish County.
