Biography
Private Daniel Robert Polson was born August 3, 1897 at Polson’s Brook, Antigonish County. He was the son of William J. Polson and Catherine “Cassie” Goodwill. Prior to enlistment he worked as a farmer on his family’s farm in Polson’s Brook.
Polson first enlisted in Winnipeg, Manitoba, November 11, 1917 in the 1st Depot Battalion, Manitoba Regiment. He was granted exemption to be discharged from the regiment on November 27, 1917. Polson enlisted again in March of 1918 in the 1st Depot Battalion, Nova Scotia Regiment March 27, 1918 in Halifax, Nova Scotia. In May of 1918, Polson was admitted to a hospital in Halifax for Pulmonary Tuberculosis. He was then admitted to Cogswell Street Military Hospital in Halifax where he stay from June 22 until July 13 when he was transferred to the Nova Scotia Provincial Sanitorium in Kentville, Kings County. Polson was discharged from the sanitorium on July 19, 1918 and was placed under Catergory E: unfit for general service. It was recommended by the Medical Board that Polson stay at the sanitorium for six months for treatment. Polson was discharged at Aldershot Camp, Kings County on August 30, 1918.
Following the war, Polson married Mary Leone Gray of Pennant, Halifax County at St. Mary’s Cathedral in Halifax on November 14, 1919. They went on have a daughter and three sons. By 1921, they were living in Stellarton, Pictou County, Nova Scotia where Polson worked as a chauffeur. By 1931, Polson was working at a coal mine near Stellarton. Polson’s wife, Mary Leone Gray, died November 10, 1970 at Aberdeen Hospital in the town of New Glasgow, Pictou County. Polson’s date of death is unknown.
