Biography

General Daniel “Dan” James MacDonald was born on September 8, 1916 in Frasers Mills, Antigonish County. He was the son of Duncan “Grey” MacDonald and Mary “Minnie” Gillis.

His brother John Joseph Duncan “Joe Duncan” MacDonald and sister Mary Angus MacDonald also served in the Second World War.

MacDonald enlisted June 9, 1941 in Beardmore, Ontario with the 18th Field Battery of the Royal Canadian Artillery. He served 9 months in Canada and 3 years and 9 months in Europe as a gunner and rifleman. MacDonald served in Britain, Italy and North Western Europe. In recognition of his service, MacDonald was awarded the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and Clasp, the 1939-1945 Star, the Italy Star, the France and Germany Star, the Defence Medal and the War Medal 1939-1945.

After the war MacDonald worked in the mining industry in British Columbia. He died in 1998 in Vancouver, British Columbia and is buried in Forest Lawn Memorial Park, Burnaby, British Columbia.
