Biography

Private Daniel (Dan) MacDonald was born April 12, 1879 to John McDonald and Anne McLean. Before the war, MacDonald worked as a lineman in Calgary. Private MacDonald enlisted in the 12th Battalion of the Canadian Expeditionary Force in Calgary, Alberta May 10, 1915. During the war Private Dan MacDonald fought in France and Belgium. On April 14, 1916 he was buried by an explosion of trench mortar shell in Flanders and was boarded out of the army due to shell shock. He was discharged from the army on January 31, 1918. Private Daniel MacDonald died April 8, 1926 of pneumonia. He is buried in South River Cemetery, Antigonish County.
