Biography
Christina Elizabeth Chisholm was born January 13, 1884 in St. Andrews, Antigonish County. She was the daughter of Donald Chisholm and Isabel A. Chisholm. Chisholm immigrated to the United States sometime between 1901 and 1910 and was listed in the 1910 United States Federal Census as a nurse in Manhattan, New York City, New York.
Chisholm enlisted in the No. 9 Stationary Hospital with the Canadian Expeditionary Forces in Halifax on April 3, 1916. Her declaration paper states she worked as a registered nurse prior to enlistment. Chisholm arrived Liverpool, England on June 19, 1916 and was posted to Granville Canadian Special Hospital, in Ramsgate, Kent on July 5, 1916. She was then sent with the No. 9 Stationary Hospital in Bramshott, Hampshire on Sepetember 29, 1916. On April 15, 1917, Chisholm was transfered overseas to continental Europe to serve at the No 3. Stationary Hospital in Doullens, Somme, France. She served with this Hospital until she was transfered to the No. 1 Canadian Casualty Clearing Station on August 21, 1918. Chisholm was then posted to the Canadian Army Medical Corps Casualty Company in Shorncliffe, Kent on Feburary 24, 1919. The following month, on March 21, 1919 Chisholm was transferred to Buxton, Derbyshire where she served at the Canadian Red Cross Officers’ Hospital. Chisholm embarked for Canada on August 9, 1919 and was discharged due to dembolization in Canada on August 20, 1919.
Chisholm returned to the United States in Novemeber 1919 where she continued to work as a nurse in New York City. Chisholm decared an Oath of Alliagance to become an American citizen in New York on July 20, 1933. She continued to reside in New York City into the 1950s. By 1965, Chisholm had moved back to Canada and was residing once again in St. Andrews, Antigonish County. Chisholm died in St. Martha’s Hospital in Antigonish April 29, 1969. She is buried in Saint Andrew Parish Cemetary, St. Andrews, Antigonish County.
