Biography

Arthur MacDonald was born March 1, 1897 in Dunmore, Antigonish County. He was the son of John MacDonald and Harriet Mounce. The family moved West from 1907 to live in North Vancouver, British Columbia where his father worked as a clerk and their home housed borders. The family then moved to Red Willow, Alberta to farm.

MacDonald enlisted in Calgary, Alberta  December 9, 1915.

MacDonald fought in France with the 38th battalion. MacDonald was gassed during the Battle of Vimy Ridge, 1917 and stayed in the Canadian Hospital in Etaples, France for three months. He returned to duty six weeks later. On May 20, 1918, he was wounded by an enemy air raid. It was said that that he had volunteered to send a message to soldiers in another area as he drove a motorcycle over a hill. MacDonald was hit in the air raid and was admitted to the Canadian Hospital in Etaples, France. He died from his wounds in hospital May 23, 1918.
