In the spring and summer of 1941, Chisholm partook in basic training in New Glasgow and advanced training at Aldershot Camp, Kings County. On September 30, 1941, he was posted to the Pictou Highlanders as an infantryman. In December of 1943, Chisholm was sent to Bermuda where he served for over two years until he was sent back to Halifax in Feburary of 1946. Over the course of his service, Chisholm served as a rifleman until he was promoted to Lance Corporal with the Canadian Military Police. Chisholm was discharged May 11, 1946 in Halifax.
