Biography

Private Archibald (Archie) MacGillivray was born September 14, 1895 in Caledonia Mills (Springfield), Antigonish County. Son of Angus McGillivray and Margaret Gillis of Dunmore. Prior to the war, Private MacGillivray worked as a lineman.

He enlisted as a Sapper with the Canadian Engineers for the Canadian Expeditionary Force and served in Canada and England with the 3rd C.E.R.B..  1st Depot Battalion of the New Brunswick Regiment. He was discharged by reason of demobilization at Dispersal Station ‘B’ Military District No. 6 on July 8, 1919 at Victoria, British Columbia.

After the war, Archie worked in the USA where he married Jessie MacDonald from Black Avon, Antigonish County. He returned to Springfield to live on the family farm. They had four children; Angus, Ronald, Kathleen (Mrs. Joe Gavin), and Ellen.  Private Archibald MacGillivray died on December 22, 1956 due to complications of M.S..
