Biography

Lieutenant Angus Donald MacDonald was born April 16, 1888, at South Side Harbour, Antigonish County. He was the son of Dougald MacDonald and Mary A. MacDonald. Prior to enlistment MacDonald was a medical student at Dalhousie University.

MacDonald enlisted in the 25th Battalion in Halifax on November 14, 1914 and trained with this unit for two months. He then enlisted with the 18th Field Battery of the Canadian Field Artillery on January 7, 1915 while he was attending medical school at Dalhousie University where he could train in the summer months with the unit. On May 29, 1916, MacDonald enlisted in the 219th Overseas Battalion in Halifax to serve overseas.

MacDonald was transferred from the 219th Overseas Battalion to the 17th Reserve Battalion in Bramshott, Hampshire, England on January 23, 1917. He was then transferred to the 26th Reserve Battalion in Bramshott on June 1, 1917. He  was transferred back to the 17th Reserve Battalion  on June 29, 1917. MacDonald was transferred shortly after to the 85th Battalion on July 9, 1917 to serve in France.  He arrived in France with the battalion on July 10, 1917.

MacDonald was killed in action October 30th, 1917 in Passchendaele, France. He is name is engraved on Panel 30 of the Menin Gate Memorial in Ypres, Belgium.
