Biography
Sergeant Andrew “Andy” Benedict Chisholm was born June 16, 1918 in Caledonia Mills, Antigonish County. He was the son of Angus Archie Chisholm and Mary Anne MacDonald. His brother Archibald Daniel “Archie Dan” Chisholm, also served in the Second World War.
Chisholm enlisted in the Canadian Army August 28, 1941. He trained in Nova Scotia, Ontario and Vancouver Island where he was promoted to Sergant where he was an instructor for small arms and a new recruit trainer. Chisholm then went overseas to serve with the North Nova Highlanders. Over the course of the war he served in England, Belgium, Germany and Holland. Chisholm returned to Canada from Holland on the R.M.S Queen Elizabeth and was discharged April 8, 1946 in Halifax. In honor of his service, he recieved the Canadian Service Volunteer Medal and the 1939-1945 Star. He also recieved the “Thank You Canada” Medal from Holland which was awarded to the Canadian veterans who liberated Holland in commemoration of the 50th anniversary in 1995.
Following the war, Chisholm worked as a farmer in Caledonia Mills. In 1946 he married Geraldine MacMillan of Fairmont. They were married at St. Ninian’s Cathedral in Antigonish, Antigonish County on November 5, 1946. They went on to have nine children lived in Beauly and Lower South River.
Shortly after the war, Chisholm worked lumbering industry. He eventually started his own lumbering and trucking company. Chisholm later worked for the school board as a school bus driver, then worked as Supervisor of Transportation for the school board’s school buses. Throughout his life, Chisholm was involved in various organizations in St. Andrews. He worked for eight years on the Senior’s Housing Commision and was one of the first members to succeed in getting Fire Hall built in 1979. Chisholm also served as a board member of the St. Andrews District Volunteer Fire Department, was a member of the Oak and Owl Senior’s Club and a fourth degree member of the Monsignor Council Hugh MacPherson Knights of Columbus. Chisholm was also active in St. Andrews Parish, serving as warden and three terms on parish council.
Chisholm died October 25, 2014 at St. Martha’s Regional Hospital in Antigonish. He is buried in South River Cemetery, Antigonish County.
