Biography

Allan Anthony “Allie” MacDonald was born August 21, 1920 at MacPherson’s Post Office, Antigonish County. He was the son of John L. MacDonald and Isabelle “Bella” MacNeil. His brothers Duncan J. MacDonald and Jerome D. A. MacDonald also served in the Second World War.

MacDonald was the first of the three brothers to enlist in the Canadian Armed Forces. He enlisted in 1939 and served in England and Germany. MacDonald was seriously injured in 1942 while he was serving overseas in Europe. He spent the next nine years in hospitals in England, Montreal and Halifax. He returned home to Antigonish in 1951.

MacDonald worked in Antigonish for a short time then moved to Hamilton, Ontario where he worked for over twenty years. Upon retirement, MacDonald returned to Antigonish and married Lorraine Dobbin in 1989. MacDonald died November 7, 2008 at St. Martha’s Regional Hospital in Antigonish, Antigonish County. He is buried in South River Cemetery, Antigonish County.
