Biography

Sergeant Alexander John Fraser was born October 16, 1882 in South Side Harbour, Antigonish county. He was the son of Roderick Rory Fraser and Janet Agnus Chisholm. By the time of his enlistment was living in Colbalt, Timiskaming County, Ontario and worked as a blacksmith and fireman. Fraser enlisted February 13, 1917 in Ottawa, Ontario.  He served in the 257th Battalion with Canadian Expeditionary Force which changed its name to the 7th Battalion of the Canadian Railway Corps. Fraser served overseas in England in Boulogne, Havre, and Étaples France. Fraser was promoted to Sergeant from Private October 1, 1919.

On March 28, 1919 Fraser was granted permit to marry Marie Marie Mimiaque of Basses Pyrenees, France. He was discharged due to demobilization July 18, 1919 while overseas in Europe. His propsed residence at the time of discharge was Castets, Landes, France.

Alexander John Fraser and Marie Mimiaque arrived the port of Quebec City, Quebec from Le Havre, France March 15 1920. By 1921 Fraser was working as a blacksmith in Colbalt, Ontario. His wife Marie Mimiaque died August 3, 1937 in Colbalt, Ontario.

By 1938 Fraser was working as a diesel engineer in Colbalt. Fraser then married Florence Legris of Bonfield, Ontario on July 4, 1938.

Fraser died September 24, 1975 in Antigonish, Antigonish County Nova Scotia. He is buried in Sainte Croix Parish Cemetery, Pomquet, Antigonish County, Nova Scotia.
