Biography
Alexander Hugh Chisholm (also known as Hugh Chisholm) was born April 29, 1891 in St. Andrews, Antigonish County. He was the son of Andrew Chisholm and Catherine Boyle. Chisholm was one of the five Chisholm brothers of Caledonia Mills who fought in the war. His brothers William Chisholm, Daniel Chisholm, Alex Chisholm and Charles Chisholm all served in the First World War with the American Expeditionary Forces. His brother Daniel was killed in the war.
Before the war, Chisholm worked as a linesman in New York City for American Telephone and Telegraph Company and lived in Bronx, New York City.
Chisholm enlisted in the 501st Engineers of the American Expeditionary Forces and was registered for the draft May 29, 1917.
After the war, Chisholm worked as a lineman with the American Telegraph and Telephone Company in the United States until 1948 when Chisholm retired and moved back to Nova Scotia. Chisholm died August 30, 1968 in Antigonish. He is buried in St. Andrew’s, Antigonish County.
