Biography
Private Alexander David Punch was born in Beauly, Antigonish County on September 21, 1896. He was the son of Michael Punch and Rebecca MacDonald. Prior to enlistment he worked as a farmer in Beauly and married Mary Carroll on February 8, 1918 in St. Andrews, Antigonish County.
Punch enlisted in Halifax on July 2, 1918 in the 1st Depot Battalion of the Nova Scotia Regiment. He sailed to England from Halifax on August 2, 1918 and arrived in Liverpool on August 16, 1918. Upon arrival he was transferred to the 17th Reserve Battalion and sent to Bourly Wood Segregation Camp in Aldershot, Hampshire. He served in England until June of 1919 when he returned to Canada for demobilzation. He sailed to Canada on the H.M.T. Mauretania and arrived in Halifax on July 3, 1919.
After the war, Private Punch farmed in Caledonia Mills and raised four sons. His youngest son James Punch served in the Second World War.
